|
Time: 3:00pm.
Admission: Free.
Age restrictions: All Ages.
Address: 91.7 FM Ann Arbor / Detroit; 91.1 Flint; 104.1 West Michigan.
“Jacktown! The Alcatraz of the West!” is our last Living Room episode of the year. Earlier in the fall I joined the Jackson Historic Prison tours and stepped inside 7 block, a fully intact, but closed cell block on the Jackson Prison grounds. There I met a series of speakers who were former employees and inmates at Jackson Prison and started to interview them. I was so struck by the power of their stories that I later went to interview them in their homes or offices to get a more in depth picture of life inside Jackson Prison. The 10 minute piece is only the tip of the iceberg, but offers us all much to grateful for in our own lives. If you are interested in the stories, consider buying Lionel Stewart’s book “Quiet Blood” written during his 30 years in prison or Jean Becker Walsh’s book “There’s a Woman in Here!” about her years as the first female psychologist in an all male corrections facility. Both are available on Amazon.

Jonesborough, TN |
National Storytelling Festival |
|
Time: 5:30pm.
Age restrictions: All Ages.
So, 3 years ago this weekend I landed in Jonesborough, Tennessee to immerse myself in the world of storytelling. I spent days sitting mesmerized by masterful tellers. This year I entered the National Storytelling Festival’s 2nd Annual StorySLAM competition by submitting a 2 minute overview of what would have to be a 5 minute story. A committee of judges selected 7 storytellers from all the submissions received between January and August. I am so honored to be one of 7 storytellers to perform this Saturday. From what I hear there will be upwards of 1,000 people there to listen. I don’t expect to win -(wish me luck anyway, though). Even if my story is good, I’m telling a sad story, and in my experience, sad stories rarely if ever win slams. But, I AM aiming to do my very best to authentically share a meaningful story with good people. And, I’m just thrilled to be selected.
I also can’t wait to listen to the other tellers, the slam storytellers, yes, but also the master tellers I love ( Kim Weitkamp, Syd Lieberman, Milbre Burch, Bil Lepp) and the ones I’ve been eager to hear for the first time (Antonio Rocha, Rev. Robert Jones, Minton Sparks, David Novak….)

JOURNEYS INTERNATIONAL is the longest standing family-owned global ecotourism company in the US. They offer such cool trips as safaris, treks, eco-tours, and cultural exploration of way cool places on every continent – Yes, including Antarctica.
I met Robin, president of Journeys International, at a storytelling workshop I led almost two years ago and was blown away by a story she developed on the spot. A year later, I met her mother, Joan, at another storytelling workshop I led and understood why she and her husband Will started this company 35 years earlier – you’d want to follow her anywhere. So, to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the company and passing the leadership to their dynamite, dynamic daughter, Robin, they are producing the Journeys Jamboree. People from all over the world, former clients, partners… will descend on Ann Arbor, MI for the Sept. 27th weekend to celebrate. That’s where I come in.
On Friday, September 27th Journeys International will host a fabulous storytelling event featuring storytellers from around the world – some former clients, some partners from the far corners of the world, and some storytellers – like me. I have the privilege of hosting the event, sharing a story of my own and working with the storytellers to develop their stories. The theme for the evening is: On the way: Stories of Travel and Transformation. See, they are so cool, when I pitched including the name “Journeys” in the title, they turned it down – they want this to be a celebration, not a marketing event. I am so thrilled about this collaboration – such good people, doing great things connecting people – what a great idea to celebrate their life’s work through storytelling. Hope you can join us for what will be a very inspiring and entertaining evening.
Tickets are $10, available at Bivouac, by calling 800-255-8735, or at the theater’s box office on the day of the show.

Time: 3:00pm.
Admission: Free!.

Our July edition of “The Living Room” has been a blast to put together. I took our 4 year old son to the carnival in Battle Creek, MI July 4th weekend and started talking with some of the “carneys” there. Loved their stories. So… had to come back with my recorder and spent way too many hours hanging out with the carneys and gabbing. I whittled it down and my producer, Zak Rosen added his magic.
This 5 minute piece should air on Michigan Radio’s program “Stateside” on Wednesday, July 24th sometime between 3-4 EST (usually the end of the program) and again 10-11pm EST.

MORE INFO:
As a community, we have witnessed Jen and Chris Stroven celebrate great triumphs and endure perilous tribulations during the last couple of years. From Jen being diagnosed and treated for breast cancer, and that limiting her ability to carry a child safely, to Chris’ amazing niece stepping forward to be their gestational carrier. And this year, their miracle baby Indi was born.
However, this blessing came with significant challenges. Indi was born 10 weeks early at 2 lbs. 5 ounces, and was also diagnosed with VACTERL association, a constellation of birth defects requiring multiple surgeries and ongoing medical interventions. As a result, Indi spent her first five months of life in the NICU, an hour from the Stroven’s home.
Through it all, Jen and Chris have been brave and resilient and have taken each challenge head on. They are so deeply loved by us all; our fantastic community has rallied around them with love and support, offering prayers, meals, and care for Indi’s big sister Mia, and more.
And yet, there remains a growing financial burden. We would like to help offset the debt they have incurred (from hospital bills, travel expenses, childcare and the like), and help them prepare for future expenses.
We hope to see you there and thank you for your support!

I do believe this is one of my favorite events of all time! Every year our dear friends (and incredible Singer-Songwriters), Annie & Rod Capps perform on Valentine’s Day at The Ark and invite other married or partnered musical duos to join them for a really fantastic evening. We had the great fortune of attending as audience members and performers in the past, and are so grateful for the opportunity to join Annie & Rod and their other fab picks for this year. Such fun, such fun this is!!! Come join us!
